Car Hire Menorca Airport

Menorca Airport is one of Spain’s popular Balearic Islands, located just off the Spanish mainland, and many tourists come to this island for its lovely beach areas and other attractions. The airport of Menorca plays an important role in tourism for the island, serving over two million passengers per annum. The island can also be referred to as Minorca, and is the furthest east of the Balearic Islands, approximately 34 km from Palma de Mallorca. Passengers in need of transport often rent a car from one of the Menorca Airport car hire companies available. In your own rented car is by far the best way to reach all the wonderful areas of Menorca Island.

The car rental companies with counters at Menorca Airport include Hertz, Avis, Sixt, National, Europcar, Budget, Easycar, Alamo and Auto Europa, and they can be found in the arrivals area of the terminal building. These are all internationally recognized companies, with rental locations in many parts of the world, and at all major airports in Europe. There are also some local car rental companies available, including Centauro, Goldcar and Record Rent A Car, and these companies offer similar vehicles and rental options as the international companies, with excellent customer service.

Menorca Airport consists of a single terminal building, which is very easy to navigate, as there are separate areas for departing and arriving passengers. Many of the departure proceedings are handled from the first floor, while all arriving passengers will enter the building on the ground floor. Once passengers have collected their luggage from the baggage reclaim area, they can enter the main arrivals lobby, which is where the car hire companies can be found. Individuals renting a car in Spain, and on Menorca Island, will generally need to be at least 21 years of age, and be in possession of a valid drivers license. The Menorca Airport car rental companies accept most local licenses, provided that they are printed in a Roman alphabet. Greek licenses are the only exception to this rule, but customers should confirm the documents required with their chosen car hire company. Foreign drivers are recommended however to arrange an International Driving Permit for their journey, as an IDP is required by Spanish Law.

Young drivers, between the ages of 21 and 25, will pay a higher rental rate than usual, as young drivers insurance is an additional cost to their rentals. This is a small amount applicable to each day of car hire, and to each young driver registered on the rental agreement. Drivers in this age category may also not be permitted to hire larger or specialty type vehicles found in certain car categories. However, the Menorca Airport car hire companies offer many suitable vehicles that can be hired by individuals of all ages, from categories including Economy, Compact, Intermediate and Estates. The smaller vehicles offered may be similar to the Chevrolet Matiz, Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, Opel Corsa or Volkswagen Golf, while very large vans for hire include the Mercedes Vito and Volkswagen Caravelle, seating up to nine passengers. Vehicles seating seven are also available, such as the Ford Espace and Kia Carnival.

The majority of the car rental companies at Menorca Airport offer additional items of equipment to contribute to your journey on the island, for example, baby seats, satellite navigation systems, luggage racks and hand controls for disabled drivers, while their other services may include one way hires. All optional equipment, besides hand controls, will cost a few extra Euros per day of hire. At Menorca Airport, hand controls are used on certain types of automatic vehicles, and should be reserved at least 48 hours in advance of your arrival at the airport. In terms of a one way hire from Menorca Airport, this can be most useful for customers who are not returning to the airport, as it allows the rented car to be delivered to a different location on the island. Depending on the rental company, the length of the rental and the final destination of the vehicle, a one way hire may incur additional charges.

Driving on the island of Menorca is relatively easy, as main roads connect all the cities, towns and villages in the region. The island is also not very large; therefore, a car can take you easily to all the areas you wish to visit. From Menorca Airport, the ME-14 motorway leads to the ME-12, which provides access to Mahón, the capital city of Menorca, and the ME-1 heads south towards Ciutadella, a favourite area of the island. Off the ME-1, the ME-15 leads to Fornells. Just south of the airport, lie the popular tourist areas of Punta Prima, Las Lomas, Cala d’Alcaufar and S’Algar, and to the west, is Es Castell. All these areas can easily be reached in your rented car.

The road rules in Spain are similar to those in many other countries around the world. Speed limits should be obeyed, and all passengers within the vehicle must wear seatbelts. Drivers are also not permitted to hold mobile phones while they drive. Cars should be driven on the right-hand side of the road in Menorca, and drivers will give way to vehicles coming from the right at intersections and roundabouts. The average speed limits to follow on the island are as follows:  130 km/h or 80 mph on motorways and highways, 100 km/h or 63 mph on open roads and 50 km/h or 30 mph in urban areas.
